We started our walk to Whitby at Robin Hood’s Bay
After a steep but short climb we reached the cliff tops and could look back across Robin Hood’s Bay
We were blessed with excellent weather and enjoined a relaxing, if brief, snooze after lunch
As we approached Whitby we passed Whitby High Lighthouse
The lighthouse, a white octagonal brick tower built in 1858, is 13m tall although due to its position on a cliff top is 73m above sea level and can be seen for 33 km. The former lighthouse keepers’ accommodation is now rented as holiday accommodation
Before finishing our walk in Whitby we visited Whitby Abbey
Established in the 7th century and destroyed by order of Henry VIII in 1540. Further damaged by a German battlecruiser in 1914. The ruins are now cared for by English Heritage
Descending Church Lane to the River Esk and Whitby Harbour at the end of our walk
